Being a musician is such a great privilege. We get to wake up every day and do exactly what we love for a living…how cool is that!? It is so easy to forget how lucky we are in the midst a frustrating practice session, or after a performance that could’ve gone better (which is every performance!) but it’s so important to remember that these problems are minimal in comparison to the fulfillment that music has to offer. We absolutely can not take this lightly, and one’s respect for music grows with more personal exposure to its profound effects.
The music that we know and love is powerful. It can bring a smile to someone’s face who may have nothing else to smile about. It can connect us with powerful memories of loved ones and sensitive moments of the past. It can unite people through what is often referred to as the universal language. An attempt to list all the effects of music could never be successfully completed because every person in the world has a different story to tell about how music has been a part of their life. One’s relationship with music will always be personal and it’s something that no one can give you and that you can’t truly pass along to someone else. Everyone is a product of their life experiences and will internalize every passage and emotion through their unique lens.
As we continue our tour through Texas, we are so humbled and excited to have been able to share some of the powers of music with students, band directors, and other audience members. Many students have been overjoyed to hear the sound of a saxophone quartet and to see a chamber ensemble bring music to life for them in the midst of a busy school day. We are trying to leave every student with an understanding that the music they are working to perform goes far beyond the notes, to these deeper connections that have been described above. Whether they can understand that now is irrelevant, but we are excited to plant the seed for the true essence of music to grow within their hearts. We are so excited that the students in the picture you see above and all of those that we have worked with have the potential to be the greatest musicians of tomorrow!
While we have experienced so many ups and downs in the past few weeks, the Kenari Quartet is as proud as ever to stay strong in its commitment to passing along what we believe to be the true essence of music to students and professionals wherever we go. This is something that no competition, record deal, or critic can determine, so we know that if we stay true to ourselves and continue to grow in our respect for music and its power, we will be able to make a lasting impact on everyone that crosses our path.
